When people learn I work from home every day, there’s a lot of assumptions made about what it’s really like. While there are some days that I sleep in or wear PJs all day (usually only when I’m hungover) long ago I established a healthy morning routine to help set the tone for the work day. This is my *actual* morning routine and a peek inside how I manage my mornings/time as an entrepreneur!
7am: I wake up each morning and immediately turn on the news. (I’m 27 but actually 55 at heart, I think.) It surprised a lot of people, but I really do get up early. I naturally wake up around this time and find that I have a ton of energy in the mornings. I just pop out of bed right away, while Robin is the exact opposite and will usually snooze while I get ready for the day.
First thing after turning on the news: getting my contacts in. I’ve been wearing contact lenses since I was a teenager. I used to have monthly lenses but after getting a serious eye infection while camping in college, my doctor urged me to switch to daily disposable lenses.
They’re the first thing I pop in, even before I brush my teeth! My brain always feels so fuzzy until I get my lenses in, does anyone else experience that?
I used to use 1-800-Contacts but switched to Aveo Vision’s ‘Aveo Hello Daily Contacts’. They are a LOT more affordable and subscription-based, so I automatically get a new box of contacts per month, which has been a lifesaver since we travel so much and I always forget to order more contacts!
And yes, to address the elephant in the room, daily contacts have more product packaging, right? That’s actually a big misconception. Bi-weekly & monthly lenses require nightly solution and those bottles are equal to about 2.5 years of daily contacts. Also, Aveo makes their own contacts and use 20x less water as part of their sustainability efforts

Since I spend most of my day at home, I never do a full face of makeup unless we’re shooting something that day, so my makeup routine is pretty simple…
I wear BB cream each day and usually just some mascara, a quick brush of blush and lipstick. I found that because I work from home, I need to mentally separate “work time” from “home time” and doing a morning routine with some makeup really helps set the tone for the day. I top it all off with some perfume and then…
I go back to bed.
Really! We don’t have space for a desk so I work in bed or on our couch. (Robin’s work space is the kitchen table.) I love to write in the mornings, I’ve been known to write three 4,000 word blog posts all before 10am, I just get all my creative flow happening in the mornings! And I love to write in bed, so after I put my Aveo contacts in and do my makeup routine, I take my coffee back and write until I don’t feel like writing anymore. (And yes, I’m writing this blog post from bed!)
Sometimes Twyla comes to cuddle. Usually, by around 10am I’m ready to switch to the couch. The couch is where emails and one of the many other billion tasks happen. It’s so easy for me to get wrapped up into work that I forget to move, but Robin and I both try hard to take a mid-day walk and then another longer one after dinner.
And that’s what my mornings actually are like! I have blogger friends who love to work at coffee shops, others who *have* to work out at Barry’s Bootcamp asap in the mornings. Other friends are night owls and stay up late. When you work from home, it’s just important to find a morning routine that works for YOU, and this is mine!
What does your morning routine look like? What do you put the most emphasis on?
