A trip to wine country is totally feasible as a day trip, but why rush? A couple of weeks ago when Justina and I decided on a last minute trip up to Napa Valley, we were originally planning on a long day trip, but then realized the trip would be 100% more relaxing and fun if we drove up the afternoon before. Nothing like waking up to a peaceful morning in Yountville to start the day off right (so much better than rushing in the morning and battling traffic!)
So, we teamed up with North Block Hotel in Yountville for a stay. I didn’t know what to expect but was blown away by the property. It’s tucked right off the main Napa Valley highway, but you wouldn’t know it because the sound of traffic doesn’t carry. Instead, you feel like you’ve been transported to somewhere in Italy. Think archways, ornate titles, beautiful balconies and a fountain in the middle of the courtyard. There’s also a stunning pool with plenty of chairs to lounge on and a very cute shaded cabana area with Moroccan style decor and colorful pillows. The decor here is top notch!
I didn’t even need my phone by the pool because the music was on point.
I drove up a bit earlier than Justina and was able to spend the afternoon poolside relaxing. One subtle detail about North Block that I loved was the music! Who ever is in charge of the playlist here has great taste. Think The Beatles, Regina Spektor, Mumford and Sons and everything in between. I didn’t even need my phone by the pool because the music was on point. The other detail I enjoyed was the glass of bubble they hand you upon check-in. Now THAT’S my ideal way to kick off a trip to Napa Valley!
We had dinner that evening at Redd Wood, the hotel restaurant. Sometimes hotel restaurants are so-so, but Redd Wood has top-notch food and atmosphere. Justina and I split an order of Burrata (the cheese lover in me died of cheesy balsamic heaven) and an order of calamari. Guys – some of the shrimps were HUGE, which is just the way I like it. I was also eyeing the Chicken Live Pattee, but we ended up not trying it so we could save room for the main course. We each ordered cocktails – I grabbed a Garden Party which was cool and refreshing for the hot night. Justina ordered the Peach Pit made with Bourbon which was a little fruity and a little sweet. They also serve wine here and we did end the night with some sparkling wine, but I recommend starting off with one of the fun cocktails!

For the main course, I couldn’t resist trying the Ribeye. It ended up being one of the best ribeyes I have ever tasted – so tender and juicy and it fell apart perfectly. Justina ordered the Chicken main, which I stole some bites of. I personally loved trying the creamed corn, one of the sides. It was sweet and nothing like I’ve tasted before. My favorite thing to order at high-quality restaurants are dishes that I don’t cook at home or couldn’t even being to cook properly if I tried. Both the Ribeye and Chicken embodied that perfectly. For dessert, the waiter sent us back to our room with a chocolate tart which I ate on the balcony while staring at the stars and sipping on more wine with Justina. If you are in the Yountville area (even if you aren’t trying at North Block) I’d highly recommend booking a table at Redd Wood for the best dinner in Napa Valley. I promise.
The next morning I woke to birds chirping and fresh, warm air (something don’t usually get in foggy San Francisco!) We both brewed some strong espresso and got ready for our day of wine tasting. I was really happy that we chose to spend the night before in Yountville. If you are heading up to Napa Valley, consider staying in Yountville at North Block for a chic and peaceful vacation.
