Whimsy Soul is nearing 4 years and it’s about time you get to know the guy behind the lens better! Robin, my real-life Instagram husband, is not only a talented photographer (he has literally laid on the ground to take photos of my shoes on more than one occasion), but he’s also a pretty dang awesome guy. Wouldn’t have married him otherwise!
We met in the summer of 2011 while both working as camp counselors at a summer camp in Wisconsin. We did long distance throughout college, as I went to school in Minneapolis and he still lived in Madison. Then, four years ago we were tired of snow and moved out to San Francisco. I started Whimsy Soul, and now you guys know a lot about me but not so much about Robin. (I do blame this on the fact that I love to talk WAY more than he does –ha!)
I tapped him for this blog post and asked him to share 6 fun facts about himself so you can get to know the guy behind the lens a bit more!
6 Fun Facts About Robin (Get To Know The Guy Behind The Lens!)
I asked my husband to share 6 fun facts about himself with you. Here’s what he said…
Sports Sports Sporty Sports Sports
I love sports. (Kara doesn’t.) People ask me what I am into outside of work and my answer is always just sports (until recently when I started cooking a lot). I realized a few months after moving to San Francisco that I wanted a new hobby. I started to go down the rabbit hole of advanced analytics to further my interest in baseball and I unlocked a whole new world that I never knew existed. I love all sports but baseball and basketball are my true passions. Kara finds it really funny that when we go to the library, she’s always bringing home a mystery novel and I have like, 3 books about math and sports!
I worked at Target for 3.5 years
After moving to San Francisco, I wanted to finish my degree in Economics and needed a job that had a flexible schedule. I am as much of a sucker for Target as any good millennial, so naturally, when I needed a job after coming to the city, Target was the first place I applied! (Also, Kara was really into the idea of the employee discount -ha!) I love to help people and I was in a great position to do so behind the customer service counter. I interacted with so many people that strangers eventually started recognizing me around the city. We even had a waitress once ask me if I worked at Target because my face looked so familiar! Now I work fulltime with Kara on all things Whimsy Soul. I handle photography, data reports, Pinterest and admin things (just to name a few!)
I love my beard
As a teenager, I never grew more than a bit of scraggly facial hair. Now I can’t control it! For real, it grows so fast now and I’m really into trimming it, finding new beard oils and maintaining my facial hair. One of my go-to tools is Gillette, which helps me keep my beard looking great as if it grew like this all on its own. Plus, Twyla REALLY likes to play with my beard for some reason.
Note from Kara: I picked up Robin a Gillette limited edition gift pack from Target recently. They have the Fusion ProShield packs which make AWESOME (and like, really really easy & affordable) gifts for your man this holiday season. The Fusion ProShield gift pack comes with one 5-bladed cartridge & is really sleek, modern & pretty.
Masterchef In Training
After Kara and I went on our honeymoon across Europe and ate so much wonderful food, I felt inspired to start learning to cook. Kara loves to tell people how I could only make mac and cheese from a box before (I could make pancakes too, just saying!) Now I have taught myself how to make foods such as gnocchi, eggplant parm, and bagels. I never knew cooking could be so much fun! These days, I end up cooking most meals and love going to our local farmer’s market and community stores to pick up fresh things to cook with.
I’m a Quaker Jew – Yes That’s A Thing
I grew up in a quaker and Jewish family. No, not Amish (you’re probably picturing that guy on the Quaker Oats box which is not at all correct!) My deserts as a child were only pieces of fruit and I never got any of the delicious sugary cereals that all of my friends had (it’s a Quaker thing but now I eat everything because #food) That being said, I love the cultural traditions that came with my upbringing (so much great Jewish food to cook during holidays!) and now that Kara and I are married, I love putting up a Christmas tree each year! I could do with a little less Christmas music though…
I love cats
My mom is allergic to both cats and dogs, so the only pets we had growing up were fish and rats. When Kara and I moved to California, her Mom flew out her childhood cat Anakey. To be honest, I don’t think he liked me very much that first year! But we grew into best friends. I have always loved cats and dogs but I never knew how wonderful it was to have a cat sitting on you at all times. (Free lap warmer!) Anakey passed away earlier this year, but now we have tiny Twyla who loves to play with my beard and nap next to me while I work each day. Kara jokes that one day when we have a house we’ll have a mini zoo of cats, dogs, chickens and goats (she loves animals even more than me!
A big thank you to Robin for writing his first ever guest post! How’d he do?

Great to hear from you, bro! Let’s cook together next time we are in the same place
Actually Quakers do eat sugary desserts – that was a parent thing, so sorry! But the Jewish holiday foods are the best! Thanks for your post!
