What is collagen good for and why should you be taking collagen supplements? I tapped my friend Brianna to review how collagen supplements work together (over wine because you gotta balance that healthy and fun, right?) and the health benefits of taking collagen daily at any age, especially when you are in your 20’s! Sit back and enjoy!

You can take hydrolyzed collagen, marine collagen, cartilage collagen, collagen peptides… so many types! They can be consumed via powders, gelatin tabs, pills, bone broths and in everyday foods. I personally love the powders – I like Musely, mentioned in this video, or Doctor’s Best, both of which are easy to find on Amazon. I think they are the best collagen supplements to start with as they are easy to use.
I personally found that an increase of collagen in my diet has to lead to better skin elasticity and helps my hairs and hair grow really fast. Collagen protein is made of amino acids. In general, taking collagen peptides regularly at any age supports joint pain / joint health, promotes connective tissue growth, and aids the look of skin. This isn’t your average protein powder supplement because amino acids are a superpower when it comes to your body.
Collagen YouTube Video Transcript
Kara: So I thought we could drink some wine, talk about healthy shit!
Bri: Cheers!
Kara: It went down the wrong pipe!
Kara: Welcome to Whimsy Soul!
Kara: As you can see, I have a friend here today!
Bri: Hello!
Kara: Hi Bri!
Bri: My name is Brianna.
Kara: Tell everyone how they can find you.
Bri: I go by DesignByBrianna on all social media channels. I do have a YouTube channel as well where I do lots of beauty, travel, and lifestyle stuff.
Kara: She’s a great beauty queen.
Bri: Aw, thank you!
Kara: She can show them your eyeliner, like get in real close.
Bri: [inaudible 00:00:33]
Kara: She can actually do makeup.
Bri: I actually did this on the Lyft ride.
Kara: Oh my, see, that’s what I’m talking about!
Bri: On the Lyft car.
Kara: She does makeup all the time on the train. I’m like, how? Cause I can’t even like contour my face.
Bri: Practice, practice.
Kara: We are here today to talk about collagen. Specifically the Musely collagen, Hello Beautiful. But just collagen in general because you don’t know much and I’ve been using it for about a year. So I thought we could drink some wine, talk about healthy shit!
Bri: Yes! Exactly. I’ve heard collagen kind of walk around the internet a little bit. Just how people are putting them into their drinks as a daily routine, it’s great for beauty, your skin, I mean, everything, so.
Kara: Yeah
Bri: And I’m hittin late 20s, you know, so I gotta start makin sure everything’s good.
Kara: It’s all gonna go south soon.
Kara: Once you hit that thirty [inaudible 00:01:22].
Bri: I know, right? It all goes down after 30. No, it only gets better. But, we want to make sure we’re still feelin good!
Kara: So I discovered collagen about a year ago and then I started taking this type for like 2 months in a row and girlfriend, my hair grew so fast, my nails grew so fast. And I swear my skin was brighter and just better. So much collagen benefits for skin!
Bri: I need that, do you see this hair? It needs to grow out.
Kara: I know, I’ve been like, “let’s grow, let’s grow” but no, it’s kinda just like when you take multi-vitamins and you feel like your nails are growing kinda fast, it’s like that but on steroids. It’s collagen production. Collagen for skin. So that’s kinda how I think about it. Yeah
Bri: Wow. And I think this would be nicer cause I’m the worst about taking pills and vitamins and all that stuff so it’s in a drink, like in my coffee or something, easy.
Kara: Drop that collagen powder in.
Kara: Yeah, so this specific brand comes in these little packets. This one is in a, shit is it raspberry? Strawberry?
Bri: Wild berry flavor.
Kara: Wild berry. I also have just the plain. I’ve used one called Doctor’s Best for a while, and that one’s just plain it kinda tastes a little fishy but it gets the job done. So it doesn’t really matter what brand you use, just as long as it’s in the powder form that’s kinda like my favorite because [crosstalk 00:02:32] exactly! You can put it in water. So I’ll show you how to use it real quick.
Bri: Oh, perfect. I’m gonna want one.
Kara: Smell it? Smells like berries.
Bri: Oh that smells great!
Kara: Smells like candy.
Kara: Okay, so my glass of water is actually already full just for this demonstration. But I prefer putting it in an empty glass–there we go! This is the pink one–and then the water. My stray knife.
Bri: You’re like, and kill! Stab, stab, stab, stab, stab.
Kara: I know, we don’t have a lot of things we live in a small apartment!
Bri: It’s all good.
Kara: So yeah, stir it up. So like i said, it’s best if you put it in an empty glass and then put the water on top, you know, to make it all dissolve. But you just want it to dissolve.
Bri: There you go.
Kara: It’s good enough. So give it a whirl. Not too bad, right?
Bri: You know what it tastes like?
Kara: What?
Bri: Like Jell-O.
Kara: A little bit like Jell-O.
Bri: Before it becomes Jell-O, like have you ever tasted Jell-O when it’s just the liquid?
Kara: Right, when your mom is like, “you have to let it set!” And you’re like, “but I wanna eat it!”
Bri: Yeah.
Kara: Yeah, I was that little ass-hole, I did that too.
Kara: Yeah, so it was that! It was so simple. So as she mentioned, it kinda tastes like Jell-O or Kool-Aid. This is the berry flavor. The plain flavor doesn’t really have any taste.
Bri: Oh, so that’s the one you could probably put in other things like smoothies and coffee or whatever.
Kara: Yeah, so if your husband doesn’t like to eat healthy you can sneak it in his coffees or smoothies or something. I also really like to have lemon water in the morning so I’ve had this thing where I put this in lemon water and this just brings out…
Bri: You just get all of it in one drink!
Kara: Just one go.
Bri: Detox your body and get collagen peptides benefits!
Kara: My body is a temple.
Bri: As we enjoy wine, cause you know, self care.
Kara: I don’t know the nitty gritty exact science but that’s not what I’m here for. I’m here to tell you if it works or not. Collagen works really well. As I said at the beginning of the video, it’s packed full of fish collagen, shit that your body needs and it makes everything on the exterior just kind of like, go go go. And it grows and it’s really great for growing out hair. If you bite your nails, I have a friend who started taking them because she bites her nails and it’s been helping her have them grow out a little bit.
Bri: Really?
Kara: Yeah, so it’s…
Bri: See, I need that.
Kara: Right, it’s like steroids. Collagen synthesis for the win! So again, you can use the Hello Beautiful brand, it doesn’t really matter. This one actually has extra vitamins in it, as you can see. So some of them actually have everything from vitamin A to riboflavin. Riboflavin?
Bri: Yeah, riboflavin, something. A T D E.
Kara: This one has a little bit of biotin in it too which is also really great. So it kinda just depends on what you want. You can get the straight up fish collagen or you can get the one that has a little bit of you multi-vitamin, if you’re lazy like I am.
Bri: Because it’s easier. Again, who remembers to take pills in the morning? I don’t! I should be way better at taking multi-vitamins but I’m the worst.
Kara: I do actually, so I take that and multi-vitamins. Multi-vitamin talk, pregnancy vitamins. That’s where it’s at.
Bri: Really?
Kara: Like the pre-natal ones because they are packed full of all the shit that the normal ones don’t have.
Bri: See, you would just think if you’re expecting that you would be taking that.
Kara: Right! I’m sure if someone ever opened up the cabinet and they’re like, “Kara, you’re trying to have a baby?” And you’re like, No, I got an IUD, that’s not happening!
Kara: But no, it also has iron. I’ve been having such a hard time finding a multi-vitamin with iron in the prenatal ones[crosstalk 00:05:45] actually do! I don’t wanna have to buy a 17 [inaudible 00:05:49] bottle of like,
Bri: They’re expensive!
Kara: They’re expensive! So just wrap it all up in one. So if you’re kind of a wrap it all up in one person, getting one like this will be good.
Bri: Yeah.
Kara: Yeah.
Bri: I like how it has the little packets too so you can just take it on the go.
Kara: Right, so that’s another thing. If you’re working a 9 to 5, you can just kuck those in your purse or you can just bring some to work and then they’re just super easy.
Kara: Yeah, take that, that’s all yours!
Bri: That’s mine now.
Kara: Take it, that’s yours now! And it’s just super easy to integrate and I definitely highly recommend it. So collagen! Collagen, there you go.
Bri: I have now been introduced and now I’m gonna stick to it.
Kara: I wish I knew more of the science and data.
Bri: Oh, no.
Kara: All that’s really important is it works, and just use it. And it’s easy.
Bri: Cheers to that.
Kara: Thank you for joining me, Bri.
Bri: Thank you for having me! And for me to take my little increase collagen with me today.
Kara: Yeah! So make sure to subscribe. Follow me on Instagram at the Whimsy Soul, and Bri on Instagram at Design By Brianna.
Bri: Thank you!
Kara: She also has a YouTube channel and I’ll link it below, along with the links to this and the other one that I’ve used and a few other collagens just for you to have a variety. Um, yeah. Bye.
Bri: Bye!
Kara: [chokes] I keep swallowing the [inaudible 00:07:11]. I think I’m like breathing through my nose.
Bri: I know, you’re like about to talk but you have wine in your mouth and you’re like.
Kara: Oh, goodness…
