Okay I’m gonna be really honest: I was a Blue Lizard hater for a hot minute… and by that I mean a few years. So this Blue Lizard sunscreen review is coming from a full-on skeptic who wrote off the whole brand after one bad experience.
I borrowed a friend’s Blue Lizard sport sunscreen a few years back and immediately got a white cast. And I am PALE. Like, porcelain-fair, lightest-shade-in-every-foundation pale.
If something looks white on me, it looks white on everyone. I didn’t buy it, I didn’t try again, and I just kind of moved on.
But then I kept hearing people rave about the Blue Lizard Sheer Mineral Sunscreen. And I figured fine, I’ll give the brand another shot. Now I’m kind of upset I waited this long.

Yes, absolutely. Blue Lizard has been around for nearly 30 years and started in Australia, which tracks because Australians are serious about sun protection in a way that puts the rest of us to shame.
The brand originally sold through dermatologist offices when it came to the US in 1998 before eventually landing in pharmacies and Costco.
Dermatologists have recommended it for over two decades, all products are mineral-only with zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, and every formula is free from parabens, phthalates, fragrances, oxybenzone, and octinoxate. Vegan and cruelty-free too.
One fun branding detail: the bottles and tube caps actually change color in UV light as a reminder to apply sunscreen. It’s called Smart Cap Technology and it’s a very handy feature for pale girlies like me to get distracted by yapping with friends and lose track of time.
My Honest Blue Lizard Sheer Mineral Sunscreen Review
The one I tested is the Blue Lizard Sheer Mineral SPF 50 Sunscreen Lotion. This is the body formula, but I also put it on my face.
I wore it on a long walk around San Francisco during a weird spring heat wave where it hit 80 degrees. I also brought it to Dolores Park for the Hunky Jesus Contest when it was insanely hot and not a cloud in the sky.
I was fully prepared for it to melt off my face, streak down my arms, and leave me looking like I’d been dipped in chalk, but none of that happened.
The lotion itself is white in the bottle but it goes on sheer. No white cast, no streaky residue, no sitting weird on top of my skin. It actually rubbed in smoothly and within a few minutes of letting it settle, my skin felt almost primed.
Like, my concealer attached to it better. That’s not something I expected from a body sunscreen, and I was surprised.
The formula has a moisturizing blend of Australian Desert Lime and Peach in it, which I think is why it feels more like a hydrating SPF moisturizer than a traditional sunscreen.
That texture is everything in summer. I hate when my makeup moves because I’m sweaty, and this stayed put.
It’s also water-resistant for up to 80 minutes, which I think is part of why it didn’t sweat off during my walk and park day even when I was fully overheated.
Active ingredients are Zinc Oxide 24.5%, which is a solid percentage for broad spectrum SPF 50 mineral coverage. No chemical actives, no oxybenzone, nothing that would aggravate sensitive skin.
Does the Blue Lizard Sheer Sunscreen Leave a White Cast?
Honestly? Not on me. And again, I am the palest possible test case for this.
The whole point of the Sheer formula is that it was designed specifically to dry clear with no white cast, and that’s exactly what it does.
This is a new formula with an improved finish compared to their older versions, and you can tell. The original sport formula I tried years ago? Cast city. This one? Clear.
Can You Put Blue Lizard Sheer on Your Face?
Technically this is a body formula, but I put it on my face and didn’t break out. I have pretty normal skin and I don’t get clogged easily.
If you have oily or acne-prone skin, I’d go straight for the Blue Lizard Sheer Face Mineral SPF 50 Sunscreen Lotion which is made specifically for your face. Same great formula, just designed for facial skin.
Worth grabbing both if you’re going to use sunscreen daily (which you should).

It has both Zinc Oxide 10% and Titanium Dioxide 8% as actives. If your skin reacts to basically everything or you’re shopping for a kid with reactive skin, this is the one to start with.
Also comes as a Blue Lizard Sensitive Mineral Spray if you’re a spray person.
Blue Lizard Sport Mineral Sunscreen SPF 50
The Blue Lizard Sport Mineral SPF 50 Sunscreen Lotion is designed for active lifestyles and contains skin-energizing electrolytes (copper gluconate, magnesium aspartate, zinc gluconate).
It rubs in clear, is water-resistant for 80 minutes, and is built to stand up to outdoor workouts. This is the formula I originally tried years ago and felt like it had a white cast on me.
To be fair, I may have been over-applying it or using an older version of the formula. Available as a Sport Mineral Spray too if you prefer that application method.
Blue Lizard Sheer Face Mineral Sunscreen SPF 50
If you want the Sheer formula but specifically for your face, the Blue Lizard Sheer Face Mineral SPF 50 is made for that.
Same idea as the body Sheer lotion but formulated for facial skin. This is what I’d recommend if you have oily or breakout-prone skin and want to do the right thing and use a face-specific formula (unlike me, haha).

It’s got clean ingredients, real SPF 50 protection, and it wears like a moisturizer instead of sunscreen armor. That’s the whole goal.
