Dressing for BottleRock Music Festival in Napa threw me for a loop the first year I attended. Unlike other music festivals, like Coachella, that beckon revealing outfits to prance around the desert in, BottleRock Festival is a little classier. 

It is Napa Valley, after all. I found this festival fashion to be a mix of traditional stylish wine tasting outfits (summer sundresses, big hats) paired with fun festival styles like fringe, crop tops and cowboy boots.

Unlike OutsideLands in San Francisco, which takes place across Golden Gate Park’s foggy climate and city style, BottleRock is in the heart of the most bougie wine region in America. 

It also takes place on Memorial Day Weekend which, while still technically in Spring, brings summer weather with hot days but cooler nights (diurnal shift baby!) So, a jacket is always great to have on hand if you plan on staying for the final headliner act, since it can get chilly. 

In terms of BottleRock festival outfits, Napa Valley’s inherent upscale style leans towards an effortless elegance for their festivals, prioritizing chic comfort and natural fabrics suitable for warm weather and outdoor settings. Think flowy summer sundresses in breathable materials like cotton and linen, or crop tops and denim that hint at festival wear. 

I recommend wearing comfortable footwear like stylish sandals, or if you want more traditional festival look, cowboy boots fit perfectly into the Napa vibe. Last year I wore my boots and a fringe vest for a boho festival outfit. Though in hindsight, wearing all black was not the smart move for such a hot, sunny weekend.

Hands down, my favorite thing to wear to BottleRock is a cute summer sundress or romper—ideally something with pockets (because, hello, practicality). And yes, rompers are totally fair game here.

Unlike other United States festivals where porta-potties are a nightmare, BottleRock’s bathrooms are next-level bougie. We’re talking air conditioning and actual cleanliness, so you can rock that romper without fear of awkward bathroom struggles.

Sundresses and rompers are perfect for the warm, sunny days in Napa. Look for breathable fabrics like cotton or linen to keep you cool while you’re dancing to your favorite bands. Bonus points if you choose a bold print or a fun color that pops against the festival’s lush green backdrop.

If dresses aren’t your thing, no worries. Stylish tops and bottoms are another great option. I personally love pairing light-wash denim or linen pants with a crop top or a flowy blouse. Pants are a practical choice since they offer plenty of pockets for your phone, chapstick, or even a mini sunscreen stick, and are easier to wrangle out of in the bathroom between sets. 

For a more festival-forward vibe, try high-waisted shorts with a fringe or embroidered detail, paired with a boho-inspired top. Think off-the-shoulder styles, tie-front blouses, or even a fun graphic tee that nods to your favorite band.

Cowboy boots are a popular choice at BottleRock and fit perfectly into the Napa-meets-festival aesthetic. Just make sure they’re broken in beforehand to avoid blisters. And if you’re going the sandal route, choose a pair with good support—you’ll be on your feet for hours.

 And don’t forget to layer on some fun jewelry—think statement earrings, layered necklaces, or even a stack of boho bangles.

Essential Non-Clothing Items: Refillable Water Bottle

While we’re focusing on fashion, it’s worth mentioning a few non-clothing essentials that will make your BottleRock experience even better. A refillable water bottle is a must to stay hydrated throughout the day. BottleRock has plenty of water stations, so you can refill as needed without spending a fortune on bottled water.

Other essentials include a clear backpack or small fanny pack, like this Baggu, to carry into the festival. Bring a portable phone charger, a lightweight blanket or scarf to sit on during sets if you want to picnic, and hand sanitizer. Oh and protect your ears with Loop earplugs!

What NOT to Wear to BottleRock Music Festival

When thinking about your BottleRock outfit ideas, there are some things I recommend you don’t reach for. Don’t shop outfits that are all black, for instance (I made that mistake the hard way) and try to avoid overly revealing festival outfits that may be great for places like Coachella, but in the more upscale, luxe crowd of Napa Valley, miss the mark. 

While you may opt for wedges or low heels for wine tasting in Napa, leave those shoes at home and instead opt for sneakers, sandals or festival ready boots. This still is a 3 day weekend of concerts and dancing on grass, after all. 

You can also skip packing the sunscreen, since they have free sunscreen stands inside the festival grounds. I always cover myself head to toe in SPF before I leave my hotel room, but am able to reapply throughout the day inside BottleRock itself.
