I spent the last month testing Supergoop sunscreen across multiple climates and I’m not gonna lie, I’m now a convert. Here’s my honest Supergoop review of the three products I tested, including the Glowscreen SPF 40, Dewscreen Hydrating Primer SPF 50, and the Unseen Sunscreen Stick SPF 40.
I’m gonna be honest with you: I used to be team Trader Joe’s sunscreen. The Trader Joe’s Daily Facial SPF 40 is widely considered a dupe of the Supergoop Unseen Sunscreen, and at $8 versus $38, I was firmly on the budget side of that skincare debate. I’d been using the TJ’s version for years and I didn’t see a reason to switch.
But then I finally got the chance to actually test Supergoop in person for a full 30 days, through different climates and activities, and here’s the deal: I think they’re doing something those basic sunscreens just can’t touch when it comes to SPF products that go above and beyond simple sun protection.
I am the color of paper. Sunscreen is non-negotiable for me. I know which ones melt off your face and sting your eyes when you’re sweaty. I know which ones leave a white cast or break me out.
So when I say these three Supergoop products earned a permanent spot in my routine, I mean it.
My Supergoop Review: The 3 Products I Tested
Here’s a quick breakdown before we go deep. I tested three products:
- The Glowscreen SPF 40 in Sunrise (champagne glow)
- The Dewscreen Hydrating Primer SPF 50
- The Unseen Sunscreen Stick SPF 40
All three got real-world testing. Hot weather and sweaty days, a mountain trip, and a long day at Dolores Park in San Francisco. And then I took two of them on the Camino de Santiago, a 160-mile hike through Portugal, for three weeks of walking. So yeah.
This isn’t a first-impressions sunscreen review post.
Supergoop Glowscreen SPF 40 Review
This one surprised me the most.
I was already a huge fan of the Saie Beauty Slip Tint (I will die on that hill, it’s my number one), so I was skeptical about a tinted SPF from another brand. But the Glowscreen SPF 40 converted me. I got it in Sunrise, which is described as a champagne glow.
I could’ve gone with Pearl for something lighter, but I wanted a warm bronze look and Sunrise nailed it.
It adds just enough color to even out dark spots and smooth over your complexion without looking like you’re wearing anything. It gives a luminous, sunkissed finish that makes you look like you just had a great vacation, not like you’re caked in product.
I wore it on a brunch day with girlfriends and then we sat in the park all afternoon. That day, I had on the Glowscreen plus a little under-eye concealer and that was it. I felt completely put together.
I knew I had real SPF protection and I looked like I had some sun on my skin even though, again, paper-colored.
The active ingredients are:
- Avobenzone 3%
- Octisalate 5%
- Octocrylene 10%
So this is a chemical sunscreen with broad spectrum coverage.
It’s SPF 40, clinically tested to boost hydration by 78% after 8 hours, and it’s formulated with hyaluronic acid and niacinamide. It doubles as a makeup primer, which means it actually does something useful instead of just sitting on your face.
What I Love About It
It replaced a two-step routine for me. I’m getting SPF, a skin tint, and a hydrating primer in a single product that takes 30 seconds to apply. The glow reads as radiant, not greasy. My skin looks like skin. It’s also $38 at the standard 1.7 fl. oz. size, or you can grab a travel size for $19.
Worth it for what it does.
One Honest Caveat
The Saie Slip Tint is still my number one for days when I want a more polished look. The coverage on Glowscreen is very light. If you’re looking for something that evens out your skin tone more noticeably, you’ll probably want to layer something else on top or go with a dedicated skin tint.
But for low-maintenance days, travel days, or any day when you want to look like you tried without actually trying? Glowscreen wins.
Supergoop Dewscreen Hydrating Primer SPF 50 Review
This is the one I get asked about most after testing, and I think it’s because the concept is so good. It’s a hydrating sunscreen AND a makeup-gripping primer with SPF 50, all in a formula that’s actually lightweight and fragrance-free.
I took this on a summer mountain trip where it was sunny and around 80 degrees. I was sweating. There was heat, dry mountain air, and elevation working against me. I put the Dewscreen on under my makeup and my makeup didn’t move all day.
My skin stayed hydrated even at high altitude, which can be really drying. That test alone made me a fan.
The product is powered by a Polyglutamic Peptide Complex, a blend of hydrators and collagen-boosting peptides that work to defend against the visible signs of aging like fine lines, dark spots, and moisture loss caused by UV exposure. There’s also hyaluronic acid and Tremella Mushroom in there.
Clinically tested to deliver a 118% instant increase in hydration and 12-hour makeup wear. No white cast, non-comedogenic, and it absorbs in about 30 seconds.
Who This Is Really For
If you’re going somewhere humid or hot and you need your makeup to survive, this is the product you want underneath it.
I’d especially recommend it for destination trips like Cabo, beach vacations, or any summer event where you’re going to be outside for hours and you need things to stay put. I’m a sweaty person (very relatable, I know), and the Dewscreen held up.
It’s also really great as a standalone skin prep if you’re not wearing much makeup at all. Your skin just looks… better. Bouncy and dewy without being greasy. And if anti-aging sun protection is something you think about, this is doing double duty every single time you wear it.
One thing to note: it’s recommended for normal to dry skin. If you’re combination or oily, the dewy finish might feel like a lot. It’s not heavy, but it does lean toward glow rather than matte.
Dewscreen Ingredients At A Glance
Active ingredients are Avobenzone 3.0%, Homosalate 9.0%, Octisalate 4.5%, and Octocrylene 9.0%. It’s a chemical sunscreen with broad spectrum SPF 50 protection. $38 for 1.7 fl. oz.
Supergoop Unseen Sunscreen Stick SPF 40 Review
I never thought I’d be a sunscreen stick person…until I became a sunscreen stick person. Here’s what changed my mind: convenience. I can keep this in my fanny pack or my purse and swipe it across my nose, cheekbones, and forehead in about 10 seconds, without touching my face, without messing up my makeup, without looking like I’m doing anything at all.
Reapplying sunscreen mid-day is something I neglected for years because I couldn’t figure out how to do it without ruining whatever was on my face. The stick solved that. I tested this on a long day at Dolores Park in San Francisco. Hot, sunny, a lot of sweating.
I put on the Glowscreen in the morning and then midway through the afternoon, when I was sure everything had sweated off, I swiped the stick across my face. It glided right on without smearing anything underneath. I looked fine. Actually, I looked kind of glowy, which the stick contributes to.
What I Need To Flag About The Finish
It does give you a glycerin glow. It claims to reduce the appearance of oil and shine, and I believe it compared to a lot of other sticks I’ve tried, but you will have some luminosity going on. I think it looks radiant. If you are the kind of person who specifically doesn’t want any shine, this isn’t your best bet.
If you do like a healthy glow and you want easy on-the-go reapplication, this is great.
The active ingredients are:
- Avobenzone 3%
- Homosalate 6%
- Octisalate 5%
- Octocrylene 9%
There’s also Marine Bamboo Extract for blue light protection, Silica Powders to absorb excess oil, and Meadowfoam Estolide for hydration. Invisible finish. Works over makeup. $32 for 0.70 oz.
How It Held Up On The Camino de Santiago
Okay, I need to talk about this because it’s the most real-world test any sunscreen has ever been put through in my life.
I walked the Camino de Santiago, which is a 160-mile pilgrimage hike from Porto to Santiago de Compostela in Portugal. Three weeks. I was backpacking every single day, walking along the ocean on days with zero shade, in the heat.
I had the Unseen Sunscreen Stick in my fanny pack at all points. On the sunny ocean days, I’d just pull it out and swipe it across my face without breaking stride. My face never got sunburnt. It was so easy. I also had the Glowscreen in my bag for those three weeks.
Together, they were basically my entire face routine because when you’re hiking 20+ miles a day with a backpack, you’re not doing a full makeup situation.
The Glowscreen gave me a little tint so I felt put together, the stick let me reapply throughout the day, and I only added a swipe of Rare Beauty clear brow gel because I get my brows tinted and laminated and I just wanted them to look neat. That was it. Two products and a brow gel. Three weeks through Portugal with real sun exposure every single day. I came home with zero burns and completely obsessed.
Is Supergoop Worth the Price?
Here’s my take, and I’ll be direct about it.
For a basic face sunscreen? I still think Trader Joe’s Daily Facial SPF 40 is a solid option and it’s $8. If you just need a clear, lightweight, chemical sunscreen for everyday wear, the Trader Joe’s version holds up and I’ll always say that.
The Supergoop Unseen Sunscreen is a great product but I don’t think it’s $30 more impressive than the TJ’s dupe.
Where Supergoop earns the price? The specialty products. The Glowscreen, the Dewscreen, the Unseen Stick. These things do something more than just protect you.
The Glowscreen is a skin tint and a primer and a sunscreen. The Dewscreen grips your makeup for 12 hours and keeps your skin hydrated at altitude. The stick lets you reapply mid-day without touching a tube or using your fingers. You cannot get that from an $8 basic sunscreen.
So my answer is: yes, worth it, for the right products in the lineup.
Supergoop Sunscreen FAQs
Is Supergoop Sunscreen Safe?
Supergoop uses chemical sunscreen filters, primarily Avobenzone, Homosalate, Octisalate, and Octocrylene. These are FDA-approved active ingredients and have been in sunscreens for decades.
If you’re someone who prefers mineral sunscreen (zinc oxide or titanium dioxide), Supergoop does have mineral options in their lineup, but the products I tested here are all chemical formulas. They’re cruelty-free and vegan across the board.
What’s The Difference Between Glowscreen And Dewscreen?
Glowscreen SPF 40 is a tinted option that gives you a luminous, sunkissed look. It adds subtle color and works as a primer. Dewscreen SPF 50 is untinted and has a dewy finish.
Dewscreen is better for dry skin or days when you want maximum hydration and makeup grip. Glowscreen is better when you want a little color with your sun protection.
Is The Supergoop Unseen Sunscreen The Same As The Trader Joe’s Dupe?
They’re similar in concept, both clear, lightweight, chemical sunscreens, but Supergoop’s Unseen formula has a silkier, more primer-like finish. The Trader Joe’s version is a solid basic.
If you just want sun protection without any extras, save your money. If you want something that also primes your skin and has a more refined texture, Supergoop is worth the upgrade.
Can You Reapply Supergoop Over Makeup?
Yes, the Unseen Sunscreen Stick SPF 40 is specifically designed to go over makeup for mid-day reapplication. It glides on without smearing and doesn’t leave a cast. I’ve done this in hot, sweaty conditions and it works.
What Supergoop Products Are Best For Summer?
For summer I’d go with the Glowscreen SPF 40 as your everyday tinted option, the Dewscreen Hydrating Primer SPF 50 for days when you need your makeup to survive heat and humidity, and the Unseen Sunscreen Stick SPF 40 in your bag for reapplication throughout the day.
That trio covers basically every scenario.
Which Supergoop Glowscreen Shade Should I Get?
Sunrise is described as a champagne glow and it’s the bestselling shade. It’s what I use and it works beautifully if you want a warm, sunkissed look.
Dawn is lighter and more pearl-toned. Golden Hour and Sunset go deeper. I’d start with Sunrise unless you know you need something significantly lighter or deeper than a champagne glow.
Final Verdict on Supergoop
I went into this as a Trader Joe’s loyalist and I came out as a Supergoop convert, specifically for these three products. The Glowscreen is in my everyday summer skincare routine now. The Dewscreen is my pre-makeup SPF on any day I need things to last. And the Unseen Stick lives in my bag permanently.
If you’re ahead of summer and you haven’t locked in your SPF routine yet, start here. Your future sunburned self will thank you.
