Did you know that Trader Joe’s has their own in-house skincare line? Like, of course, they do, they have everything else in that store. They’re basically like Target where I walk in and come out with food I didn’t even intend on buying.
I’ve seen the Trader Joe’s Rose Facial Oil and rose toner on the shelves before and, allured by their $5.99 price tag, finally decided it’s time try them out for myself. I have always had success with rose hop oil products so I figured this would be an easy buy.
PST – don’t buy these products online as they are upwards of $12 on Amazon, but half the price in-store!
I picked up the facial oil, toner and also a sheet mask ($1.99) to test out and share my honest review with you guys! Keep watching the video to hear my thoughts, or keep reading if you prefer.
Trader Joe’s Rose Facial Oil & Toner Review
As I mentioned, I loved the price tag of these products. That how TJs gets you! The rose water facial oil was $5.99, same as the rose water facial toner and the sheet mask was just $1.99, which is fair compared to some sheet masks that can be over $5 each!
Also, the packaging is cute and simple. I brought them home and immediately tried them out. Each bottle tells you to use the product after cleansing. In my normal makeup routine, I usually do cleansing, toner, oils or moisturizer, BB cream and then beauty products, so I went with that order.
Let’s start with the Pros
I adore the scent of Rose anything, so they got me with the rose scent right away. It’s hard to make Rose things not smell like Grandma’s house and they did a good job!
Again, loved the price point of this. I used to use Herbivore’s Rose Water, but it’s over $30 a bottle. I now use Evanhealy’s hydrating water and it’s also close to $30 a bottle. So a $6 bottle was an amazing deal!
The face oil can be used for many different things, not just as a moisturizer for your face! You can use it:
- your hair to fix split ends
- in your body lotion to give it a boost
- as a nail cuticle oil!
I’ve been using it a lot as the later, as I ruined my nails when camping. It’s been on my list to pick up a bottle of Essie’s cuticle oil (this stuff is magic, I swear) but the Trader Joe’s facial oil will do for now!
In regards to the sheet mask, I liked the cucumber scent. It did a great job at cooling my face, which I think would be an amazing sheet mask to bring along a tropical vacation (hello sunburns!) I would buy it again.
Now, the Cons
I found that the toner dried my face out too much. Unlike the Witch Hazel toner, which balances PH but doesn’t dry my skin out, the Trader Joes Rose Toner left my skin feeling too dry and tight. Not a feeling I liked!
I found the oil to also not hydrate my skin enough. I have dry skin and always need a beauty routine that puts hydration first. I’ve used the facial oil many times and found that it never keeps my skin hydrated all day like almost every other moisture I use. And that’s kind of the point of oil, eh?
I also had my husband try out both products. My husband, Robin, has a totally different skin type than myself. While I have dry, sensitive skin, he has oily acne-prone skin.
After using the toner, he felt like his face felt hydrated, which was different than what I felt. But, he complained that the facial oil wasn’t absorbing into his skin. It was leaving his face too moist. You could even see his skin shining from the oil that wasn’t being absorbed in. Yuck!
So, on myself, the products left my skin too dry, and on my husband, left them too moist. In terms of online reviews, Amazon reviewers mostly say positive things about each of the products and a friend of mine likes it as well.
But, in terms of toner, I’ll be sticking to my Thayer’s Witch Hazel toner which is so so good. I’ll also be sticking with my EvanHealy Hydrosol mist for mid-day refreshers.
You get what you pay for when it comes to these skin care products and I think it’s totally worth it to pay a bit more for a better product by a different brand.
Have you tried any of the Trader Joes’ skin care products? If you love them or hate them, leave a comment below, I want to hear your thoughts!

I need to try the witch hazel you recommended, I’ve heard so many good things about it!

I love the facial oil for the reason that it sits on my skin and shines … I use it under my eyes on on my cheekbones when I’m not wearing makeup and I FEEL like it makes my wrinkles less noticeable (I’m 54) ugh as I wrote that number it sounds so old!? I like the toner to spritz on my face throughout the day for a quick pick me up it feels refreshing even over makeup … didn’t know about the pumpkin mask but I’m going on a girls w/e in a few weeks and I’m gonna pick one up for us to do … ty for sharing!?

I love the oil, and seems like TJ’s has discontinued it!
They say it’s “seasonal” and it will be back in spring.
(What season is skin care?)
Good point – what season is skincare? I guess rose is spring??
Their stores are just not big enough to carry everything throughout the year and bring in new items, as well. I wish they could -I love stopping there!
I just bought one bottle of the rose oil as the pandemic was starting. Liked it first time I used it. Went next day to buy more and all was gone. Never seen it again. Won’t pay the high price for it now considering I only paid six dollars… bummer !!☹️
It’s seasonal will be back in February and stays through the Summer. I love the rose oil and the toner
It’s a seasonal product. It just came back in stock. ? I bought some yesterday. The rest of the shelves were bare due to the coronavirus but facial products were plentiful. They also have a new eye moisturizing cream… I LOVE IT! It worked wonders for the bagginess and puffiness I have around my eyes! Truly a keeper!
I bought some of the oil last night. I have combination skin but the wrong product makes me break out like THAT so it’s a gamble. I washed my face with my regular cleanser and then used this. I have been feeling dry recently, like washing my face stings, so I neededsomething. I only used it once so far, but I liked the smell and I started with just 2 pumps, needed a third, but this morning my face feels soft, not dry, and best of all, I’m not overly oily. I think it’s a winner, at least so far. I love TJs.
I’m trying all the rose line and so far, I like it. It absorbs right in to my skin, love the light scent and price. I too love the witch hazel you mentioned?
I like variety!
You can return any TJ’s products you don’t care for … they are wonderful about returns!! I love my TJ’s!!!
I didn’t know that!! That’s a great insider tip, thank you!
I used up the whole bottle of Rose Oil, and I loved it. I am 76, and it was perfect for my skin type. I have been disappointed that it has not been restocked, even though they told me it would be back in November.
I like the Rose Oil personally. Use it twice a day after cleansing. First with their Hyaluronic Acid , then the rose oil. I love it on my skin. I can’t say too much about the toner. I have it, but don’t really use it. Last week I went into my local TJ’s to try and get another bottle, just to have on hand. They were out. One of the employee’s told me to start checking back around Valentine’s Day.
I add a small squirt of TJ’s Rose Facial Oil to my moisturizer and mix it with my fingers before applying it to my face; I don’t use it straight.
It’s interesting that they consider this a spring item. I only use it in the winter when my skin is really dry. And because I don’t use up the product very quickly, I’ve noticed that the bottle loses its rosy smell after several months.
Have not tried mask but I adore both oil and toner… keep an extra 3 bottles of toner in fridge … the oil is great if used as directed… two pumps… goes right into my skin! And of course the $ is fabulous…
I wish it worked for me, I love the price, too!!
Your review is moronic and has no objective critique value. Just because the products didn’t work FOR YOU and your husband, didn’t make them not good products.
Let me just sheet- wth the fact that oily skin using oil??
Doesn’t take rocket science too..i figure out that’s a bad choice, lol.
I just don’t like you bashing a good product. It’s good for many reasons.
Hey Amelia,
You clearly love the oil and that’s great that it works for you. I hope you see the irony of your comment here.

It’s just a skincare review it’s not that deep chill out. I know it’s been a hard year for everyone but it doesn’t mean that it’s alright to be mean to people.
Havent tried the oil but love the rose water – it actually has witch hazel so it’s been a great choice for my sensitive/dry patch skin
I just found this post but I wanted to include that I use the facial oil for my cuticules but use the oil before I shave my face!
Their stores are just not big enough to carry everything throughout the year and bring in new items, as well. I wish they could -I love shopping there!
Official reply from TJs:
Rose Facial Oil has been dc’d! :/. It was the best. Wish I knew what the base oil was or if it was another company’s oil relabeled for TJ?
Please reply if you have any info. Thx!
My experience has been the opposite. Thayers’ dries me out. I absolutely love TJ’s rose oil (my skin absorbs it well) and had been waiting for them to restock it this spring. Am so disappointed they’re discontinuing it!
I LOVE the oil. I have dry skin and hate lotion. Most skin products (including most soaps) make my skin angry and the rose oil is the only thing I use year round. I think it only comes out around v-day and June but I buy 4 bottles to tide me over.
I find the face mist is a nice cheap alternative to Caudalie Beauty Elixir Face Mist – which has a stunning scent and feel but doesn’t do anything to justify $32. For $6 this fits that mid day refresh. Witch hazel is more of an end of day cleanser. Their Maurala face oil is hydrating, just be aware since it’s real/natural over time it may have a scent but doesn’t impact hydration.
I used the rose oil not as a stand alone and I like it. I apply my night moisturizer then a squirt of the oil on my hands and apply. It seems to absorb well and I feel hydrated. I have dry skin as well.
