Where To Find Wisteria In San Francisco

*In Desperate Housewives voice* Meanwhile on Wisteria Lane, Kara walks around Potrero Hill for an hour looking for the blooming Wisteria she found on Instagram and by the 4th or 5th steep hill, starts questioning her life choices…

In the end, I found the famous San Francisco Wisteria spot I’ve seen flood my Instagram feed countless times each spring, and got one hell of a workout, too.

What I love about wisteria is how it smells just as floral and whimsical as it looks. Even though it was cloudy that morning, and a wee chilly, standing under the dropping vines of flowers instantly made me feel like I was instead standing in some English garden on a warm summer day. It’s sure romantic.

Where To Find Wisteria In San Francisco

This amazing wall of purple and pink wisteria is located on the home the corner of Mariposa Street and Connecticut Street in Potrero Hill in San Francisco. It faces East so the best time of day to come for photos is either early in the morning before the fog has burnt off, or in the evenings when the sun is behind the house.

  • Pro tip: If you come in the morning, stop by Boba Guys afterward for a morning tea!

I’m sure there are more wisteria around the city (I feel like the Mission or Noe Valley probably has something somewhere) so if you know of other cool spots, drop the street below in the comments so everyone can see! I’ll try to keep this post updated with addresses as I come across more, too.

When Does Wisteria Bloom In California?

Usually, wisteria blooms around early May, though this year, this particular garden of wisteria’s flowers popped in Mid April. I *think* this bunch is Japanese Wisteria, though it could be Chinese Wisteria. I’m not an expert and they look almost identical.

The whole Bay Area is covered in flowers year-round. It’s one of my favorite parts of living in San Francisco. Starting in February the cherry blossoms will bloom. Then the Tulip Gardens and Magnolia trees start blooming in March. By April small patches of Poppies will show up out of nowhere on sidewalks and medium strips of the highway. June, bougainvillea plants are in full bloom with pink flowers and they stick around until fall.

What I love about wisteria is how dang purple it is in real life. These photos don’t really have much color correction at all. I personally think white outfits look the most romantic here, but I would also consider a fun pop of pink or lilac, too (like this lilac dress).

On this morning, I wore a white midi dress from Target paired with a straw hat from Asos and a thrifted straw purse. The heels carry a pop of color with the fun rainbow tassels. They’re last season, but this is a similar style.

I hope you go visit this beautiful California wisteria tree! I think it’ll stay in bloom until around June so run, don’t walk. If you go, I’d love to see your photos (tag me on Instagram @thewhimsysoul so I can see!)

And again, if you ever find any other really cool flower fields or patches, please let me know!
