The Beautiful Son De Flor Dress I Wore In Europe (Review + Sizing Tips!)

  • Kara
  • July 28, 2022

As a major dress and slow fashion lover, I’ve been eyeing Son De Flor dresses for literal years now. Every couple of months I’ll see someone on Instagram running through a flower field in a Son De Flor linen dress, or biking through a cobblestone European dress with flowers in their basket wearing one of these iconic dresses.

But, at a price tag of over $200 (and my body being a US size 12/14 and unsure if these would even fit me well) I’ve always held off. Until now. As you guys know, Robin and I are l living in Copenhagen for the summer and I treated myself with a new classic linen dress for the trip.

I’ve gotten so many questions on Instagram about this dress: the fit, sizing tips, the quality, pleasesharethelinkrightnowIneedtobuyit! sort of things. So, I’m finally sharing my Son de Flor review with you!!

Wearing the Son De Flor dress in Copenhagen

The Tale Of Son De Flor Dresses

Son De Flor was founded by two Lithuanian sisters who were tired of the fast fashion industry and were inspired to create an “elegant classic Peter Pan collar dress with a charming twirl from the best linen we could find in the small country near the big Baltic sea.”

It all started with this classic dress that could be worn year-round, and for years to come. Since, they’ve expanded to other clothing like coats, sweaters and more dress styles and colors. But still, there’s a Son Do Flor dress for every occasion, which makes it a perfect travel dress.

The dress in Stockholm!

Son De Flor Review + Sizing Tips On The Classic Linen Dress

I shopped the Classic Linen Dress in the short sleeve option, though I must say choosing between short sleeves and long sleeves was really hard for me. And, picking the color probably took me another full day of deciding.

Classic white? Spring green to pop against my red hair? Bright blue? But I finally landed on this beautiful red poppy color that works perfectly for all seasons. It’s light enough for summers running around Scandanida, but the color and style will also be so fun to wear come Christmas time. On my quest to build a capsule wardrobe (which is really hard to do a fashion blogger, let me tell you!) this dress has already proven itself versatile. Plus it looks cute with sneakers, boots, heels and flats.

Oh, and it has pockets!!

It’s In The Details

There’s so many companies out there that make linen dresses, but the Son De Flor classic dresses are different at their core. And it’s beyond the literal way they are made (closely with local producers to ensure ethical and sustainable practices) and all the way to the design.

Wearing the dress under a sweat on the way to Norway

These dresses have all the details right. First off, the pockets. Everyone loves pockets and my large iPhone 13 hasn’t fallen out of these yet. But I also adore the circle skirt.

While it’s red on the top layer, the white lining underneath peaks through when I walk or twirl, for an extra little pop of interview. I can also roll the sleeves on the dress to show the white lining. Combined with the Peter Pan collar, this dress truly makes me feel like I’ve stepped back in time when wearing it (in all the best ways.)

Son De Flor Dress Sizing

I won’t lie, sizing was the most stressful part of this shopping experience for me. As you probably know, dear reader, sizing charts suck. And ordering even from small companies like Son De Flor can be confusing, especially because they are an EU company and I know from personal experience that companies outside America don’t always size things in the same way.

I took my measurements three times to make sure I picked the right size, which ended up being an XL. And, it fit really well. It’s just a wee bit tight around the shoulders but that has gone away the more I wear the dress so it now feels very natural on my body.

If you choose to order, I highly recommend you also take care in taking your own measurements. They offer up to size XXL / 16 — if the lovely ladies at Son De Flor every read this post, I would love to see you offer sizes beyond XXL. I promise you that there are tons of plus size vintage lovely girlies out there who would want to wear your dresses!

Son De Flor Shipping Is Fast

Considering they’re located halfway across the world, I was surprised by how quickly they were able to ship to my home in the United States. I think the website estimated 15 days but it came under a week. And, if you spend over 200 Euros, it’s free!

Caring For A Linen Dress

If you’ve ever owned anything linen before, you know linen clothing is a headache to handle sometimes and needs special care. My Son De Flor linen dress is 100% linen, pre-washed & softened. It won’t shrink after washing at home but you do need to use low-temperature water and natural laundry detergent (no tumble dry, bleach or dry cleaning!)

We always handwash the dress and let air dry on our drying rack. And you’re probably thinking: wait, doesn’t that leave your dress super wrinkly? Of course! Suitcase travel, even when I gently pack this baby in, always leaves it wrinkly as well.

That’s where a steamer comes in handy. I swear by this dual voltage steamer that I bought in 2018 initially to take on trips but it’s so good I also use it at home. This baby gets wrinkles out of linen super quickly and doesn’t weigh too much, so it’s a no-brainer to take on trips. That’s actually how I get all my travel outfits to look like they didn’t spend 20 hours stuffed in a suitcase and flown across the world.

Things I Don’t Like About My Son De Flor Dress

As you guys know, I always share the pros and cons when it comes to reviews. Really, the only complaint I have about my dress is this one button on the front that always pops itself loose / out of the hole. I think this is because of me – like, it’s totally a me problem because of where the dress sits on my body, the fabric is slightly tighter and I think the button pops out.

When I get home I may sew up the button hole a tiny bit to help prevent that in the future. We’ll see how it goes! But that’s my only complaint here.

I hope my Son De Flor dress review is helpful! If you have your own Son De Flor reviews to add, drop a comment below so everyone can see. I personally really love my dress and will probably add another to my collection at some point down the road. They’re a slow living must-have.

But for now, this beautiful red linen dress makes me really happy and I can’t wait to keep wearing it literally all over the world.

While originally we thought Son de Flor was great, they have seasons where their fabric is poorly dyed and loses colour, especially the 2021 line of clothes where we have 3 dresses that had areas of complete colour loss. They took back 1 dress, but were completely unhelpful with the others, including giving us instructions to rinse in vinegar and then wash with table salt which caused even more colour loss. Their suggestion was to re-dye the dress ourselves after having to remove the white trim.

While some items have been great, too many issues with poor quality control of their dye process should make anyone question ever spending that kind of money with them, and we certainly regret the few thousand we have spent as my wife is afraid to wash her Son de flor dresses for fear of them being ruined in the wash.. in short, unless you’re willing to risk a loss of $250 per item, they should be a hard pass for anyone.
