New to our 11 Days of Witchy Wellness Challenge? Get caught up here!
One of the first things many new witches learn about is the practice of spiritual cleansing and purification. Cleansing is all about wiping the energetic slate clean and clearing away negative energy or bad vibes from your space. This is a great way to begin your spiritual practice, but it’s also a good energetic hygiene habit to maintain on a regular basis.
It’s easy for us to pick up on the energy of others and to carry their burdens, worries, or negativity around with us. Cleansing your body and home is a great way to shed those external influences so you can re-center in your own energy.
Kara, for instance, always smoke cleanses her apartment every Saturday morning after cleaning as a regular ritual to re-center herself into the weekend.
Challenge #2: Cleanse Your Space Today
One of the most popular ways to cleanse your space is to burn a bundle of dried sage. (If you opt for this choice, be sure to use common sage and not white sage, which is commonly sold in stores but is sacred to Indigenous peoples and severely over-harvested for the predominantly white, commercial market.) Pst — we’re giving away an eucalyptus smoke stick in our giveaway.
You can also cleanse your space by burning other cleansing herbs, such as rosemary or lavender, by burning a candle scented with essential oils, (but not fragrance or synthetic scents), by spraying or diffusing cleansing essential oils, or even by ringing bells or working with singing bowls.
Smoke, scent, and sound are all excellent ways to clear away stale, stagnant, or negative energy in your home or even in your aura or around your body. As you cleanse, open the windows and imagine any negative energy leaving the space.
Note: When cleansing, some people like to pick a mantra, prayer or positive affirmation to repeat to help manifest or attract positive energy. These are 99 affirmations & mantra ideas if you need a place to start!

I cleaned the bathroom does that count? 😊
It totally does!! Physical cleaning is great for spiritual hygiene as well
I am constantly cleansing my space using incense, essential oils (specifically selected for the intention I am creating), and my koshi chimes. My favourite mantra is, “perfect love, light, peace and health.”
Oooh love the addition of chimes!
was just diffusing some essential oils this morning after I burned my toast!
Haha I totally relate to this!
I often forget about cleansing negative energy and bad vibes. Thank you for the reminder .
I love the ritual of cleansing with smoke and so glad other herbs are listed! I’ve used sage but hate the smell. Lavender or rosemary or eucalyptus sounds amazing! Can’t wait to try. Do you recommend drying fresh herbs from the store or buying ready made bundles from an apothecary shop?
Either is fine! If you buy bundles, I recommend finding a reputable source that is gathering their herbs in sustainable ways but other than that, it’s fine to make your own or to purchase ready made bundles!
Love the post! As a candle creator, I wanted to note that there is some misinformation here regarding candles and essential oils. Fragrance does not necessarily equal bad — what people should really be on the lookout for are avoiding fragrances that contain phthalates and carcinogens. Similarly, essential oils are truly meant to be diffused not burned. Heating essential oils can change the properties of them, and they often have low flashpoints making them more combustible than fragrance oils. Pet owners should be especially careful about what they burn or diffuse in their home as some common essential oils can be toxic to pets. Also, there are companies like Bath and Body Works that put Essential Oils at the forefront of their labels when they really have minuscule amounts and are much more synthetic than consumers are led to believe. Candles that are purely made from essential oils would be much more expensive as the oils themselves are expensive (and less sustainable for the Earth). Sorry to write a novel here — I’m just super passionate about this topic. Thanks again for the great content as always!
I love ringing my bell at the start and finish of my morning ritual, it has such a wholesome tone and I feel renewed and ready to take on the day.
