It might just be me, but I swear the air inside the Shangri-La Hotel in Vancouver smells like flowers. Robin and I had a long morning already – we had woken up in Victoria, took the ferry to Vancouver, returned our rental car, and by the time we wrangled ourselves to downtown Vancouver, we were tired. And wet from the rain.
Type: Luxury Hotel
Good For: Business, Couples
But then we walked into the lobby and the air smelled like flowers. We’ve never stayed at a Shangri-La Hotel before, but I instantly knew we made a good choice to call this spot home for our time exploring Vancouver.
This hotel has a rooftop pool and hot tub that can’t be missed!
Robin and I love to walk as much as we can while we travel. This is for two reasons. First, so we can discover photo ops and learn more about the city for our guides via foot vs. a car or a train. And second: we love to eat and drink! And walking 10 miles a day helps counteract that. Good thing we found Vancouver to be super walkable, and the Shangri-La right in the heart of it all.
Just blocks away from all the good stuff in Downtown Vancouver, we found ourselves in the heart of the city at Shangri-La.
It’s just a few blocks away from a major train station, museums, waterfront, the Vancouver lookout and Gastown. We even walked to Granville Island from the hotel, which led us to some pretty amazing views over the bridge (though, we opted to take the ferry back because that is a bit of a walk round trip.) If you are visiting Vancouver in December, Shangri-La is right next to the German Christmas Market, too!
When we weren’t walking all over the city looking at all the Christmas lights, we loved curling up on the couch in our room, which had these stunning floor to ceiling windows giving tons of natural light and views of the city. I think my favorite part of the room was the automatic curtains! With a press of a button, they opened and closed (I’ve never seen that in a hotel before!)
Another perk of the room was our balcony. Even though it was raining too much for most of our stay to really enjoy, we did have in-room service al-fresco one morning in the fresh air.
I highly recommend you dine at the Market by Jean-Georges. We had breakfast there one morning and the service was top-notch. But it was the menu that really stood out to us. Usually, hotel restaurants have safe menus to please a variety of travelers, but I was happy to find some Asian dishes on the menu. It gave us both the chance to try Congee for the first time (a tasty Asian porridge.) This came with a dim sum basket for a fun and very Shangri-La way to start the day.
