Relax in the alpine lakes during the hot summer months, or rent a cabin and go skiing during snowy winter days.

Have a unique mountain experience by staying at this dreamy luxury vacation rental. Nestled by towering trees, the Whimsy Homes cabin is a beautiful blend of indoor and outdoor living that will have you wishing to stay in the mountains of Arnold forever.

2. Point Reyes National Shore
Less than a two hour drive from the bustling streets of San Francisco is the quaint coastal town of Point Reyes. Known for their fresh seafood, scenic cliff trails, and lighthouses, Point Reyes is the best escape from the busy city life.
The best time to visit Point Reyes National Seashore is from late September to early November when skies are clearest. Summer days are warm and sunny, but there is often a dense fog that doesn’t disappear until midday. Visiting during the colder winter days risks heavy storm rains that close roads, while spring days are still chilly with a strong breeze.
Point Reyes is perfect to visit for a day, but even better for a weekend trip. If you’re short on time, visit the Cypress Tree Road to witness a beautiful natural phenomenon and Chimney Rock for an easy hike with a stunning view of the ocean.
Of course, the day wouldn’t be complete without trying some fresh oysters at Hog Island Oyster Company in Tomales Bay, or a quick photo stop at the Point Reyes Lighthouse. To learn more about how to spend a perfect day at Point Reyes, check out our full guide for the best sites to visit, restaurants to eat at, and clothes to pack.
During your stay, check out Olema House, a magical hidden retreat with the coziest property and loveliest garden. Found on the rolling hills of Point Reyes, Olema House features luxurious cabin-esque rooms with doors that open right into a private patio.
3. Timber Cove
Located on the Sonoma Coast in Jenner, is Timber Cove Resort, perfect for couple getaways or weekend trips with friends. Only a two and a half hour car ride from San Francisco, this mountain getaway encapsulates all the best parts of coastal living.

With impeccably decorated rooms that are reminiscent of California lodging and private patios that overlook the pacific ocean, this is the digital detox of your dreams. For some outdoor adventure, explore one of the hiking trails on the property, or head over to Fort Ross State Park, Sonoma Coast State Park and beach or the Armstrong Redwoods State Natural Reserve.
The Lodge at Bodega Bay is another popular resort nearby, located in the bustling city of Bodega. However, if you’re looking to escape from the crowds and don’t mind being away from the shopping and bars, Timber Cover is the way to go.

5. Sonoma County
Next door to Napa Valley is the underrated wine country of Sonoma County. More affordable and laid back than Napa, Sonoma is worth the hour drive from San Francisco. Even though Sonoma and Napa are next to each other, it isn’t recommended to try to winery hop between the two since there is a mountain range separating them.
It would only add more time on the commute and give you less time to relax. If you’re debating between Napa and Sonoma, read our full side-by side comparison here.
An all-time favorite town is Healdsburg, perfect to visit in October when the vines turn bright orange and yellow. Find out which ones of our favorite Healdsburg wineries to visit as well as how to make the most out of your experience by getting free wine tasting experience. The town also has some of the most delicious bites from tapas to rooftop bars.
For a luxurious weekend stay, Forestville’s Farmhouse Inn is hidden in the countryside, but still accessible to the vineyards.
